As an educator, I strive to create learning environments that make impactful connections between course content, the self, and the world-at-large. To create these kinds of learning spaces, I rely on the tenets of Universal Design for Learning, including building course content with specific goals in mind, and providing multiple means of representation, action, expression, and engagement to cultivate inclusive learning experiences for all students. One way in which I put this into practice is through project-based learning, which allows students to engage with course content in a way that is meaningful and relevant to them, while learning useful practical skills for their future professional lives. Furthermore, as a sociolinguist, the importance of linguistic and cultural diversity has always been at the forefront of my teaching. My courses are therefore designed to help students see language as multi-faceted and learn how to apply analytical tools and critical thinking skills to better understand language and the world around them.
